History of Congregation Ahavas Achim

1889

Congregation Ahavas Achim incorporated in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Congregation meet in private homes or rented stores in New Brunswick.

1893

AA purchases two parcels of cemetery land in Van Liew Cemetery, North Brunswick.

1900

Congregation purchases building from Salvation Army.

1909-1919 

Congregation served by Rabbi Israel Marcus.

1911

Building remodeled.

1919-1931 

Congregation led by Rabbi Samuel Baskin.

1930

Building enlarged and modernized.

1931-1933 

Congregation served by Rabbi Abraham Shapiro.

1938-1984 

Rabbi Pesach Raymon zt"l becomes dean of Orthodox rabbinate.

1949

Social hall added adjacent to building.

1960

Massive renewal program launched.

1961

New sanctuary rededicated.

1980

Sanctuary destroyed by fire on Yom Kippur.

1986-2006

Congregation led by Rabbi Ronald L. Schwarzberg.

1987

Congregation moves to Highland Park. 

1989

New building in Highland Park dedicated

2000

Rabbi Steven Miodownik named Assistant Rabbi and Program Director.

2006

Rabbi Steven Miodownik named spiritual leader of Ahavas Achim.

2010

Building expansion dedicated.
